Patented in 1801 in Switzerland, the invention of the Tourbillon is often cited as the most significant development in watch history. It consists of a regulating mechanism (balance wheel with hairspring) and a lever escapement, which makes one revolution in one minute. It eliminates effects of friction and earth's gravity. Among the world's most gifted watchmakers, only a select few are capable of manufacturing a Tourbillon.

When a watch's escapement is in a vertical position, the earth's gravity either accelerates or slows the balance movement, causing a rate gain or loss. The Tourbillon Mechanical Watch compensates for the gravity-induced gain or loss with its mobile carriage. The Tourbillon Mechanical Watch, whose carriage is mounted on one side only, with no supporting bar, allows better visibility through the cutout window at 6 o'clock. The watch's face (and back) is made of sapphire glass, making it scratch-resistant. 

The Tourbillon Mechanical Watch is a limited edition. Only 760 pieces have been built. It takes 6-7 months for a master watchmaker to construct one. And only one out of every hundred units is able to meet Swiss mechanical watch standards and make it out of the factories. Most Tourbillon Mechanical Watches are collector's watches.
